Kids, usually toddlers, can lose their temper in public. There is nothing weird in it. Such a situation usually occurs when they see something they like, but you aren’t in a mood to buy them. To be honest creation of such a scenario is not necessary; they might be frustrated over something else but get it out on you by screaming at a public place. This situation could be embarrassing. So, it is better to be prepared for it or at least have some handy ideas in hand to deal with such a situation.
Don’t be angry
The first thing that you need to know is that you are dealing with a toddler, so getting angry at a public place is neither going to help you or them. So, it is better that at least one of you should remain in control and obviously, that someone is “you”. Your child is still developing skills to regulate their own emotions. They currently need support from an adult to help them manage their emotions when they are upset.
Try ignoring
If your kid is just showing mild tantrums, try ignoring him/her. It might help you in dealing with the situation. Your kid might feel that you haven’t notice and this is not going to work. So, you can get a safe side out.
Talk to them
In case, the situation is worse than a simple scream, the next thing you can try is talking to them. Tell them that screaming is hindering you from understanding what they want. Ask them to use their words to explain what they want. When you understand their needs, maybe work out a positive solution for the both of you.
Hug them
Sometimes, the cause of frustration is even unknown for the kids. In such a situation, hugging them and rubbing their back can soothe them. Show that you love them even when they are screaming. This may help them calm down and stop screaming
Distract them
Although this strategy might not work in every case, in some cases, it definitely can help. That depends on the situation. You can either take the favourite toy of your child with you or give them a snack to eat. This is really going to help you in dealing with the situation. Additionally, you can also make them look at something intriguing, if it really grabs the attention of your kid, then the chances are that your kiddo would be good to go.
Have a pep talk when at home
Once you are back from the place or before going out, give your toddler a small pep talk, telling them that they don’t have to scream if they don’t like anything or want something. They can simply tell. The success of this tactic can depend upon the age of your kid, but at least they’ll get reinforcement to behave well.
In any case, don’t feel embarrassed about the thing that everyone is looking at you or your kid. Kids throwing tantrums at such a young age is something natural. You’ll need to understand them and let them grow with age. Don’t expect them to be super mature when they are too young. So, relax and enjoy this time as well.
